The sale of frozen chicken meat will be wholly forbidden in Russia.

Starting from 1st of January 2011 the sale of deep frozen poultry meat will be wholly forbidden in Russia. Such declaration was made by Gennadiy Onischenko the Head of Russian Consumer Inspectorate and head sanitary inspector of Russia.

"It is talked about unconditional refusal. We forbid the turnover of the deep frozen poultry meat at the Russian market, no matter whether it is our meat or imported one", - stated Onischenko. He added that starting from next year all the poultry meat should be sold chilled.

Onischenko reminded, that the decision concerning sale limitation of frozen poultry meat had been accepted in 2008 already. It was supposed before that this prohibition would concern all the kinds of meat, but later it was proposed in Russian Consumer Inspectorate to limit it to poultry meat only. For the moment it is already forbidden to use the frozen poultry meat, including chicken meat, in the production of baby food.

The decision of Russian authorities provoked complaints from World Trade Organization (WTO). It was declared by the Head of Commercial Negotiations Department in the Ministry of Economical Development, Maksim Medvedkov. According to his speech, many participants of WTO think, that the prohibition to sale frozen poultry meat doesn’t correspond to the standards of the organization and hasn’t any scientific basis.

Starting from the beginning of the year 2011 Rospotrebnadzor (Federal Service for Protection of Consumer Rights and Human Well-Being) was also prohibiting the delivery of poultry meat from USA because of imposition of new Russian Technological Regulations. According to new norms, the maximum amount of chlorine in solution for the processing of chicken meat was decreased four times, but the most of American chicken meat producers didn’t follow these requirements. Up to the middle of August of the current year the USA chicken meat producers couldn’t deliver their production to the Russia, but later the parties adjusted the questions concerning deliveries and in September the Russian party lifted the ban to import the poultry meat in respect of 83 from 87 American companies.
